Whether you are #TeamLawrence (us) or #TeamIssa on HBO’s critically acclaimed Insecure, you will surely agree that the music is seriously lit. Music supervisor Kier Lehman, along with Solange, Raphael Saadiq, and the incredibly talented co-creator Issa Rae, has begun a serious TV music revolution. Whereas the show is a visual and topical love letter to Los Angeles, the soundtrack is easily the same sonically. Leaning heavily on local artists like Anderson .Paak and The Internet from time to time, the show’s groove illuminate some artists that many non-Millennial viewers may not have heard of before watching the show. This aspect makes the show truly three-dimensional and the music becomes another character that is multi-dimentional and ever-present.
In last week’s episode, viewers were left hanging after a passionate and unexpected ending between a reluctant Lawrence and an emotionally vulnerable Issa. Coming into this week, many conversations have been had around soulhead HQ about whether Lawrence should have even come to his former crib at all and what that meant for the storyline. With that as the backdrop, we were poised for drama. This week was a great continuation but we will leave that there as this is a no-spoilers type of community. Molly and Issa at the Black art exhibit in Season 2 Episode 2 of HBO’s Insecure
The music for week two includes some serious fire from Dreezy, Boogie, Matt Martians and many young and emerging R&B, soul and hip-hop artists. Our personal favorite tracks are Teedra Moses attitude laden “You Better Tell Her,” the ethereal “Frustrations + Solutions” by Kilo Kish, “Jump High” by Lion Babe and Childish Gambino and, of course, “Supermodel” by the remarkable Sza. Honestly, the music takes an already amazing artistic effort to even great heights. Kudos to everyone involved with this groundbreaking piece of entertainment.
