Today, were flashing back to a few memorable Yo! MTV Raps clips that feature not one, not two, but three iconic 90s artists doin their thing live and direct. Visiting the Yo! studio on two separate occasions in the latter half of 1992 to promote their excellent sophomore LP Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1, The Brand New Heavies were joined by two of the key collaborators from the project.
Fresh from fleeing Main Source for greener creative pastures as a solo emcee and producer, the lyrically gifted Large Professor joined the band for an energized performance of lead single Bonafied Funk. During a subsequent episode, the Heavies Delicious Vinyl label mates The Pharcyde flex their freestyle muscles over a BNH-blessed instrumental and discuss their forthcoming debut album Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde. The Pharcyde were formally introduced to the world on Heavy Rhyme Experiences closing track Soul Flower, and their visit to Yo! was one of their first major TV appearances.
In the entertaining opening interview, BNH co-founders Jan Kincaid and Andrew Levy joke with co-host Ed Lover about how Vanilla Ice, Marky Mark and MC Hammer declined the groups invitations to appear on Heavy Rhyme Experience. Later, when prompted by Ed Lover to name the all-time worst rapper youve ever heard in your life, Levy doesnt miss a beat in nominating Vanilla Ice for the dubious honor. Inspired by the already lighthearted affair, Ed Lover also proceeds to call out his colleague Doctor Dré for glancing at the beauty of the lovely NDea Davenport.
