Though Pete Rock & C.L. Smooths musical partnership regrettably proved an ephemeral one, the dynamic duos output from 1991 to 1994 yielded some of the greatest, most enduring records in hip-hop history. 1992s Mecca and The Soul Brother is universally regarded as their paramount achievement, though 1991s debut EP All Souled Out and 1994s swansong LP The Main Ingredient also qualify as classic material.
The pair subsequently collaborated on various projects during the years following The Main Ingredients release and recently reunited for a string of live shows. And lets hope that rumors of a forthcoming new album come to fruition sooner than later. Until then, we can reminisce about the good ol days with the tandems memorable 1992 Yo! MTV Raps performance of They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.) and The Creator, the latter of which youve likely heard more frequently over the past few months, as it was lifted to glorious effect for an Android TV spot. Moreover, while C.L. Smooth was the indisputable chief lyricist of the group, this footage offers testament to Pete Rocks more-than-competent microphone skills, which have often been overshadowed by his unparalleled production prowess.
