A ton of new music perpetually finds its way into the soulhead offices, and while were always eager to give the goods a proper spin, only a small fraction of what we hear ultimately steals our breath away. The latest object of our aural affection to render us breathless is South London siren Ego Ella May, a burgeoning talent overseas that many folks here in the States may not be hip to just yet, but absolutely need to be.
In the past two years, Ella May has blessed the world with not one, not two, but three elegantly executed EPs, beginning with 2013s This Tree, followed by 2014s Breathing Underwater, and most recently, the sublimely atmospheric Zero. All are FIRE, though the latter is what were here to gush about today.
Produced by Wu-Lu & Reiss G, the intoxicating serenade of How Far is the sonic lynchpin of the three-song EP, and upon initial listen, its hypnotic magic will be cemented in your dome for a long time to come. The EPs bewitching bookends are the enchanting spoken-word of Bull and the exquisitely ethereal groove of Tea & Sympathy, both of which demonstrate Ella Mays range and versatility, both vocally and sonically.
Rumor has it that a debut full-length is on the horizon, and were already impatiently awaiting the album. But until it surfaces, well just keep Zeros gorgeous electro-soul on repeat for days and days. Word to the wise: don’t even try to resist the addictive allure of Ego Ella Mays rapturous voice. Just submit and fall deep in love. Right now. You can thank us later.
