Yep, this tape is hecka old (shout out to the Bay!), but for many folks, it may be new. Over the next few months, we will be re-releasing some of the most influential and classic mixtapes, including this one, that made some of today’s stars who they are.
In this case, Kanye West was already a household name but his insistence on doing mixtapes shows his allegiance to the root of hip hop, the underground. While many mainstream artists initially looked down on this form of promotion, artists like 50 Cent and Lil Wayne built strong followings and careers by giving their music away. We salute these early pioneers and encourage you to stay tuned for more classic mixtapes.
