Happy Birthday, Sly Stone and Lightnin’ Hopkins! 03/15/1943 and 03/15/1912

Sly StoneLightnin Hopkins

Today we are celebrating not one but TWO birthdays of soulhead legends.

The first of which, Sly Stone of the incomporable Sly and the Family Stone, was born on this day in 1943. Celebrated as a composer, producer, and frontman for his family’s famous band, Sly Stone is celebrating 71 funky years of life!

Our second birthday celebration is for Lightnin’ Hopkins, who was the epitome of blues singer. Born Sam John Hopkins in 1912 in Centerville, Texas, he remained a Texan for most of his life. It was from Houston where his career launched and he became known for his blues style, in which he played multiple  instruments, including bass, piano, and percussion.

In celebrating both of these birthdays, we want to give you a little taste of both men’s music throughout the day. As always, we thank our soulhead legends for their invaluable contributions to the genre!
